Greetings. First post ever so be gentle. I came across these two nickels while CRH for my collection and 2024 versions. I'm fairly new to the hobby and was surprised to find "S" mint mark nickels. After researching (thanks to the wonderful coin database on this site) I see that there were both "business" and "proof" strikes for these years from San Francisco. I know the pictures are not the best but I believe that the '69 is in fact a proof coin based on it's luster while the '70 is not. My question: Is it unusual to see a proof strike coins in circulation?

You want to look beyond luster. A proof strike will have mirrored fields and frosty devices.

Proof strike coins can be released into circulation by people who do not know better. Sometimes a collector will get bored and release them, but typically they are spent by those who inherited or stole them.

If you meant to post photos in this topic, they did not come through.

Both appear to be business strikes to me with the 1970 showing much more circulation wear and damage.

Yes, both of these are business strike nickels, but to answer your question about circulated proof coins, yes sometimes they do escape a collection and wander in the wild until a collector save it from further damage. We call these proofs "Impaired Proofs"
