Hello, my fellow treasure hunters!

First. Yes, LMGTFY is real (so is the irony of Google searching the meaning of this acronym hahaha). but I've moved states recently, & with all my searches I've found very little on local mentorship (or if this sort of thing even exists in this area). I've found local shops, but most seem to be auction houses & pawn/gold shops so less coin-focused. I also found a small collectors group in my area but they only meet once every other month & (of course) I missed this month's meeting by a day to two.

In the meantime, I'm turning to technology! Haha so here I am, turning to my favorite group online coin experts to A) see if coin mentorship is a thing (if it's not it should be) & B) request advice on finding local or virtual video mentorship groups, forums, sites, etc.?

Per usual, yall are the best & thank you for any assistance you may provide. It is always appreciated!

Have a wonderful day

My strategy worked of writing handwritten letters to several clubs and organizations, which led me to receive a phone call for encouragement and more information. If I were you, I would contact specific clubs of coin types that you are interested in, and then ask if there are any local collectors to your area.

There's no formal organization providing one-on-one mentoring for coin collecting, to my knowledge. There's coin clubs, which if they're doing theor job properly can provide group encouragement and education (and most coin clubs only meet once a month), and there's Internet coin forums, which provide a more informal encouragement group.

If you were to ask me "why not", I would answer that I suppose coin collecting doesn't really need "mentoring". There is no One True Way to collect coins, nor even a select few possible options - the field is unlimited. There's general advice, and amongst the general advice is to "collect whatever you like".

The other issue with coin collecting is one of security. Times have changed since the mid 20th century, and people who own a collection of valuables can be a paranoid bunch. A lot of folks who collect coins and who might theoretically make good mentors are going to be reluctant to give out their personal names and addresses to random people, just because they ask for it. This is of course another benefit for asking for help from the Internet; it's much more anonymous.

Sap makes good points, so I believe your best solution is to cultivate relationships here on CCF.
