This "striking" coin is ranked No. 6 in the 100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins book, written by Nicholas Brown, NGC Senior Vice President for Conservation and Grading David Camire, and prominent coin dealer Fred Weinberg. Weinberg has owned this particular coin for decades after acquiring it at a coin show in the late 1970s.
"I was stunned ... when someone put this coin in my face. I remember going back and going 'wow!'," Weinberg said in a podcast with Jeff Garrett, Senior Editor of the Guide Book of
United States coins (the
Red Book). "I bought it, and I put it away for myself, it was so impressive."
This is "the best double strike" of a
Morgan dollar known, said Weinberg, adding that only a handful are known where the second strike was off-center, and in those cases, it typically leaves just a small nub of the second strike near the edge of the coin. In contrast, this coin has a dramatic doubling of the Liberty figure on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. Its extreme rarity is because the US Mint has been very efficient at screening out errors in coins that are larger and made of precious metal.
This is the first time this coin will be offered at a public auction.
"Whoever ends up with this coin will end up with the key of their collection," Weinberg said. "It will be the most eye-appealing coin in their collection."
