It is, of course, not technically a "coin", being an unofficial issue struck by the Bavarian mint in Namibia's name without their knowledge or consent. The target market being German collectors keen to obtain issues representing Germany's former colonies, hence the German language and "mark" coin denomination. The coins were commissioned by and marketed through a Californian mail-order company.

Namibia didn't authorize its own coins until late 1993, issuing coins denominated in dollars, not marks. The coat of arms on this coin is also not that of independent Namibia, but rather the colonial coat of arms of South West Africa under South African administration.

Due to its unofficial nature, the coin has an "X" catalogue number (X E6) rather than a KM number.
