This week's installment of Philately Friday features a United States 13-cent stamp issued in 1978 to honor the legacy of America's Native Americans. The stamp features one of the "key" coins of the Indian Head Cent series (1859-1909) - the 1877 issue.

The regular-issue stamp was slightly smaller than the conventional size and was considered an "experimental issue" to gauge public acceptance. The stamp's "first day" city was Kansas City, Missouri (January 11, 1978). Its release was limited to the Kansas City, Hartford, CT; Memphis, TN; Portland, OR; and Richmond, VA markets. The small size proved to be harder to handle and easier to lose - it was not fully implemented.

The stamp was designed by Walter Brooks. The cachet on the First Day Cover (FDC) is a more authentic depiction of a male Native American Chief vs. the Cent - the Cent features a female non-Native American wearing a headdress.

The 1877 Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, and had a mintage of 852,500.

Very nice!

Filling the 1877 hole in my Dansco—that was a good day.

Congratulations - but you waited too long jbuck. You should have filled that hole in 1978. According to the description on the back of the FDC:

"In the realm of coin collecting, the 1877 Indian Head cent is very rare, and retails for $800 in brilliant uncirculated condition."

Oh for the want of a time travel machine.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

Funny, when I was trying to win a nice F/VF circulated example in the early 2000's I thought $300 was too much and never would bid that much.
