Looks like a commemorative token relating to the Ku Klux Klan from 1928.
Difficult subject matter for sure.

A quick search turned up this information:
Listed as #KK-26 in Birdsell's Ku Klux Klan Tokens. "There" refers to the 1928 National Konklave. There are similar tokens for Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. All of the originals (there are some restrikes or cast fakes) were struck by Whitehead & Hoag. The same Klansman-on-horseback obverse die was used on at least three other KKK tokens as well.

This was the description from a Worthpoint auction - who knows if it is just fluff the draw attention to it?

"You are bidding on the following auction lot: RARE 1928 Knights of Ku Klux Klan Illinois Realm, "I Was There" Bronze Medal or Token . A seldom seen medal/token from 1928. Apparently these were issued for various states by the Ku Klux Klan for the National Klonvocation meeting in 1928, although we do not have specifics. Based on our research, this is a rare item worth a substantial premium. The piece offered here came from a large estate of exonumia, and is in excellent condition. The diameter is 31.75 mm with a weight of 13.72 grams. Struck by the well known firm of Whitehead & Hoag. Guaranteed to be a genuine original example."
