NGC - Coin of the Day: For Throwback Thursday, we go back to the year 1035, when on this date, William the Conqueror became the Duke of Normandy, reigning until 1087. He invaded England and became its king in 1066. This English penny, issued under his rule there is part of a Heritage Auctions sale in September, here.

Getting familiar with ancient coins. Thanks for the post. Genealogy research indicates this is my wife's 25 great-grandfather.

Maybe I'm being dense here. What year was the coin struck?

The coin is an English penny, and was struck during WIlliam I's reign, which is the 1066-1087 window. While the coin does not have a date on it, and mediaeval coins rarely can be narrowed down to a single year of issue, archaeological evidence points to a period of issue for the PAXS type of circa 1083 to 1086.

Ok, thanks. Definitely an amazing coin, to be struck during the reign of such a historic figure.
