What are your opinions on the strictness or liberality of
TPG grading standards in comparison to standards of, say about ten or so years ago?
I just bought an NGC MS65 1909 S VDB Lincoln from a mail order dealer with a large presence in the market place. It ain't no gem and is going back. The holder dates from the era beginning in about 2018.
Except for my type set, Draped Bust - current, I collect the old stuff, primarily Liberty Seated. I have been collecting since 2018. I have physical limitations that keep me from shows and the local dealers have little to no inventory. I began collecting uncirculated raw silver dollars and Walkers over the internet, which I learned was a bad idea when a local dealer told me most graded AU53-55.
After that rookie experience I collect only slabbed coins. I have found a trustworthy dealer specializing in my collecting era who calls out overgraded or coins with problems and sets prices accordingly.
Not long ago, I was shocked to read about the resubmission game NGC and PCGS were playing in the mid 2000 decade where each would upgrade the other's coins, as well as the PCGS FTC consent decree, both of which happened before my collecting time.
More recently I have read on Coin Community both that standards have continued to loosen and that they
have become stricter.
I have learned a thing or two about grading and look carefully at the pictures before buying (except for PCGS True View which cannot be trusted on toning) as well as examining coins in hand after receipt, although it takes an act of will to send a coin back that seems close. I also give preference to CAC stickered coins, although I don't send coins in any more because I used to get qualifiers, but now I only get rejections even after pre-clearing with my local CAC dealer.
So I'd like your opinions on current
TPG standards, as well as holders that typically seem to be correct as well as those which need careful examination.
Thanks much.
