INCIDENTLY, it seems I always give the wrong impression when I post things... I am curious about the BAGS OF SILVER THEMSELVES, not the ebay auction.

Are those little beads a common way to trade silver?

I dont know how common it is but its not totally unusual. Ive seen it sold that way from bullion houses tho that is a rather large amount. Personally I'd never trade in beaded metal, of those quantaties most of all unless it was a deal to good to pass up.

Which this isn't.

They are not usually used to trade silver since they are not marked. The beads are used by silversmiths to melt and make jewelry or if one wanted to make their own bars and stamp them.

I know its a long time since this post was active, but silver "beads" can also be called "popcorn" and it is used in electroplating as silver anodes in silver cyanide plating baths. My silver supplier told me the popcorn was produced by spraying liquid silver into water and letting it harden as it falls to the bottom of the tank.

I never used the popcorn though. We bought silver as hard temper rolled bars 4" wide by 6" long and 1/4" thick. The thickest I could get in hard temper was 5/8" thick.

jerrytheplater, you just reminded me of the copper balls we used to use in the plating machine for the manufacture of circuit boards. They were about an inch in diameter and shipped in by the pallet. It was a big plater.

All of that being long gone, I wish I'd pocketed just one for a keepsake... Oh, morals...
