I found this in a BU roll of Lincolns I bought. It looks like a thin planchet. The rim is not raised in the 8:00 to 10:00 area and the lettering/details are pretty much gone.

I tried to get an edge shot but it's tough to see much in it. I have not seen a planchet this thin over such a large area (20%).

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas about this coin?

It weighs 2.6g. Others in the roll weigh 3.1g as they should.

Interesting, another lightweight https://goccf.com/t/47161
Mine is consistently thin while yours appears to be tapered(weak side is the thinnest)

Yes - it is very thin one one side only - about 1/4 of the planchet apparently was thin before striking. That's what I'm guessing anyway.

I bought this roll on ebay for about $15 and was stunned by the quality of it. Average is MS63RD with strong strikes and almost no carbon spots. There's a couple 65s in it and a few with weak strikes but this one was really odd.

I wish I could find another roll like this for $15 but I honestly just got lucky with this one.

To get to the proper thinkness for the blanks, the strip is passed back and forth between the rollers that compress and thin it. Most of the strip will be the proper thickness but there will be an area at either end of the strip that is tapered down from the proper thickness to a point. These tapered areas are supposed to be cut off the strip before it is fed into the blanking press. On rare occasions they forget to trim it off but more often it gets trimmed but possibly not in the right place and there is a short tapered section. Blanks punched fron that area will be a little underwait and tapered on one side such as the piece in the original post.

I agree with biokemist6, it's called a tapered planchet. ~ Jim
