I saw the thread yesterday about the Silver Surfer promo on the US quarter and it was clearly pointed out to the makers of the promo that it was illegal. I saw these on ebay and went to the Merrick Mint site and wonder if this would be considered illegal? They state they are approved NHL items and they do MLB Baseball and many others too.

Hmmm, I would think that crosses the line of commercialization/advertising and therefore would not be legal.

A few years back I bought some "Baseball card packs" that came with a "colorized" State Quarter. It had, for example, Roger Clemons, Derick Jeter, etc. etc. "colorized" on one side. Sy Young award winners were "honored" as well....
I've since given all of these away to a family member who is a "baseball fan". Of course I told him that the value "numismatically" would be only face value .......he didn't care.

Isn't this a nice "legal tender" bill? Sheesh. They're doing stuff to more than quarters!

I understand the "mania"......but it's just a tad premature after barely only 100 days in office to be putting him in with our most accomplished founding fathers.........coins, paper funny money.....etc. etc. "Legal" or otherwise.......it's just too much !
In 2012 will Mitt Romney be "honored" like this ? .......he'd be the first "Mormon" in office ! .....
I remember some Democrats were irritated that there was a "program" to inspect the granite and see if they could put Ronald Reagan on Mount Rushmore. There was talk of putting him on the Dime and replacing Roosevelt.....Nancy Reagan balked at that and adamantly said that the former President would NOT want that at all. So, he basically just got the airport named after him and a Naval Aircraft Carrier. And naysayers and detractors and "revisionists" will, can, and do try to "diminish" his legacy and importance. But that's expected.
But you know, it's just really depressing and annoying when fellow "Capitolists" use a "mania" for their personal financial gain in the " Coin World" to "sell things while they're hot", when "the thing" they're selling is not even considered an acceptable collectible product by those in the very hobby that they are intruding into ! So, it's largely rejected by true numismatists, but sold like "hotcakes" to the unsuspecting public for financial gain, and in the end, that "public" is left with something that is either "worthless" or worth nothing more than "facevalue".......
So, all of this just makes me ill ! .......

Only if you were to put them back in circulation. As long as you aren't trying to circulate them they are perfectly legal. The paper money with Obama on them on the other hand, would possibly be legal to circulate.
