American Numismatic Society - The result of several major donations over the years, the Norton-Van Buren Archaeological Study Collection of the American Academy in Rome began as a small museum with a predominantly pedagogical aim, as its objects were intended to serve as teaching and learning tools for professors and fellows.
Comprising a significant proportion of said collection are the approximately 3,560 coins representing various periods, including those bequeathed by Esther Van Deman upon her death in 1937. Her coin collection reflects a wide interest in the Roman world. Spanning a period of several centuries, from the days of the Republic to the Age of Constantine, the Van Deman numismatic collection is a testament to the work of a unique and passionate woman who revolutionized the field of archaeology at the turn of the twentieth century. Presented by Valentina Follo (American Academy in Rome).
