I just got back from a few weeks in Europe. While there I picked up a few of these small, copper Ardite coins. The few that I have all have very nice obverses, yet the reverses with the bust are quite weak. I know that these were crudely struck and were probably dug coins, but I just wonder how they would grade due to the great difference in the condition of the two sides. How would you grade this example of the three?

I wouldn't know how to grade that as obverse and reverse has a very big difference. That is a very nice example of a 1653 ardite. Where did you buy that?

Thanks, manilagalleontrade! I bought it at a coin show that occurs every Sunday in Barcelona. I bought 3 of these. Two 1653s, one of which I gave to a relative, and a 1654. They all have weak busts like this one does, but they are all very different in strike detail and how centered each side is. Is it possible that it was typical for these coins to have one side that was much weaker?

Coin show every sunday? I didn't know that. I know they have in Plaza Real of Barcelona, rastrillo (bazaar or a swap meet?) every sunday, is it that one?

manilagalleontrade- That's the one! But beware since there are a lot of dealers who have a ton of fakes (even 8s that have raised rather than incuse chop marks lol), but there are some who are trustworthy and have good stock. Every time I pass through on business I make sure to hit that show a couple of times.

These ones are not weak but as you can see not as nice as what you have.

Ok, We have the same here in Madrid. Every Sunday at Plaza Mayor. So, if you get to Madrid you know where to go and drop me an email so I can show you around.
