American Numismatic Society - Before he died in 337 CE, the Roman emperor Constantine I (306-337) communicated to the public, and especially to powerful officials, military generals, and barbarian chieftains, his plans for the imperial succession. During 20 years, Constantine promulgated at least six different models involving anywhere from two to four different individuals. He developed a totally new form of constitutional succession, based on the dynastic principle coupled with the support of the army. This method proved to be exceptionally stable, lasting until the final fall of the Roman Empire in 1453 CE. Presented by Ralph Mathisen (ANS Fellow and Professor of History, Classics, and Medieval Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign).
