American Numismatic Society - Join Ángel O. Navarro Zayas (Professor of History, Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico) for an exploration of late-18th-century paper money from the Spanish Caribbean Basin and Spanish Louisiana. During the second-half of the 18th Century, Spanish authorities had to issue emergency paper money due to the lack of sound currency, either in silver or gold. These Spanish colonies had to issue paper money since they did not receive the Situado Mexicano (Mexican Subsidy) they received annually from the Viceroyalty of New Spain (actual Mexico). The Situado Mexicano was an annual amount of silver and gold coins used to pay ecclesiastics and the military, build the garrison and fortifications, and use daily money among the Spanish colonies.
