Good morning, thank you for looking. I need some help with a coin I have in my grandfather's collection. I have reviewed several online ancient coin sites, but I'm having trouble identifying the obverse figure. On the reverse, I can see a sitting deity, and there is lettering on both sides. I did notice that the sitting figure doesn't look like it is turned to the side like many others. I'm not sure if that is significant or not. The coin is bronze, some of the photos may make it look like gold, but it's just the blue background messing with my camera. I was trying to get more contrast. The coin is 9.1 grams, 2 cm across, and 4 mm thick. Thank you for your help and knowledge.

It looks like a copper/bronze Greek coin from Smyrna, Ionia, 2/1 cent. BC. Apollo obverse, on reverse poet Homer seated holding scroll, city name behind him. These can have different local magistrate names in front of Homer. Below is mine. You could try and find an exact match to yours on acsearch.info, Wildwinds or on CNGcoins.com research (their sold database) and other sites.

I think I'm reading ...ΡΙΣΤΟΚ?AΤ...; this sounds like the name is probably Aristokratos (or Aristokrates), and some googling found this example that confirms Aristokrates.

Interesting coin!

january1may, that looks like a match but the coin is so worn difficult to read. These were struck for something like 150 years with numerous magistrate names. Only the catalogues of major collections like SNG Cop., British Museum would have a good amount listed. A lot of names on ancient coins are otherwise unknown to history, who they were.
