They sure do look like Die Clash marks.

Possibly. However, that's the opposite direction for the typical clash behind the drummer's head.

Usually the clash is most evident through the torch and in front of Washington's Adam's apple.

It could be a clash and that's George's hair-ribbon.

This is crazy, I was just going to ask the same question!

Also a Denver mint example, looks to be the same marks:

Edit: I just have to again state my awe at the odds of this; the 'roughly-AI-calculated' odds of two people asking about the same possible clash on the same coin in the same forum on the same day naturally are 1 in 225 trillion. Lenzos 57, we need lottery tickets tomorrow! 19764 here we go...

MNP, that curve through the flame is a classic '76 die clash. Considering all the strong scratches and the faded appearance of the clash, I would conclude that a Mint worker tried to abrade the clash off the die face, leaving that remnant.

The other mark you posted behind the drummer's head could also be a clash remnant or something else.

Brandmeister, much appreciated!

I spot the same mark in Lenzos 57's 5th picture.

I'd imagine the spot behind his head has to be related to the touch up of the die. It certainly doesn't match the clash link posted above, but it's oddly consistent...

Die clashes can have significant differences in alignment. The overlay from Yokozuna shows the ribbon curving upwards. However, if you look at that area on Washington's hair, the outline reverses direction and is nearly vertical along the ponytail. So it's possible the clashes you guys posted are shifted right a little bit.

As you said, it's also possible that a Mint worker produced that feature while polishing out the actual clash from the ribbon.
