I have about 30-50 Canadian banknotes that I'm planning to send in for certification so that I can resell them. They are all dated 1917-1970's and are worth somewhere between $300 and $800 each.

I'm looking for suggestions about where you all have the most success sending Canadian banknotes for grading. I've used BCS in the past but felt they were very hard on my bills. I'm wondering if I might get better results (AKA higher grades) with one of the other graders such as PMG, PCGS, LCG, etc? Is the general consensus that BCS grades lower than others on average? Thank you in advance for your opinion.

I've only used BCS to grade my notes to date, though have bought many notes which have been graded by both BCS and by other services. I would agree with your comment that BCS has a reputation for being a hard grader. That said, I've also found that knowledgeable currency buyers are aware of his grading versus grading done by others, and price accordingly. My philosophy as a buyer is to buy the note (or coin) and not the holder.

Perhaps though there are benefits to the higher grade if you're planning on selling and are working with a less sophisticated buyer.

I'm in agreement with Tdk_Wpg, Steve is quite strict which is why I only get notes graded this side of the border and stay clear of lesser known graders out West since I'm in the Golden Triangle.

The Canadian grading standard is clearly listed and detailed in the Charlton CGPM Catalogue. Often heard is that a BCS CU would easily be bumped up a few notches to a GU if same note was sent to PMG. I've seen some cross graded banknotes and spoke to dealers who said they lost money as a result.

To answer SilverCoinz question, I would stick with BCS as their bulk order pricing is per note, not based on the individual values of each one unlike the graders in the U.S. and you can always ask him to make a note of the demerit points and anomalies separately with the completed order.

If you want the higher grades, then by all means a U.S. grader but you may find them more difficult to sell. At the end of the day, grading whether it be coins, paper money, hockey or Pokemon cards is subjective and not an exact science.

Personally, I'm more interested in the authentication and the preservation rather than the grade. Left in their plastic sleeves, they are more apt to be spent or taken to the bank when I pass away. These holders have also served me very well at club promo events where I put out radars, replacements and even a nice CU 62 Devil's Face $1. They are self explanatory and even a volunteer with little knowledge of banknotes can point out why they are more valuable than the majority of the notes set aside with the introduction of the Loonie & Toonie.

I too have used BCS for grading especially during the July/August promotion that they run - if they are still.
They are tough graders but that can work to your advantage if you cut them out and send to PMG.
But, I do think you might consider Legacy, located in USA, they are excellent graders and much less expensive than PMG.
