Were those coins certified? It kinds looks like a PCGS holder. Anyway, when these coins came out, someone called it an "extra sail". There is no extra sail. What makes it, mistakenly, appear that way is that the upper right sail should should be included with the "cameo'd" sections. It's really n ot an extra sail, it's a 1/2 sail. There is the halyard line upper right, but no cameo's behind it. What it really is that the cameo section of the upper right should include where the sky is showing under the halyard line.. And why did they recognize the MD, the most common of all irregularities.

They were graded by CCCS. The extra sail is visible but not in these pictures. I had to reduce the resolution so to post it. As for the machine double die, each one has the exact doubling.

Quote: It kinda looks like a PCGS holder Bill, that is a CCCS holder. You are right about the sail, also there are about 12 or 13 different varieties of the ship, all depending on the frosting.

Yes, I know of a bunch of them that had all kinds of different frosted(sail) areas. That's why I'm surprised that CCCS denoted it a "missing sail". But they're not known for being very accurate.

There's no doubled die indicated here. MD ( Machine Doubling) is a worthless type of doubling. CCCS (not CCGS) really dropped the ball here.

I new to using a community board, or how to grab a quote to respond, but I don't understand a reference to a "missing sail". As to the extra sail, here's pics from 5 of the 8 coins listed. None are missing the extra sail. I feel 5 should be plenty but if you want more pics, I can provide them for you. I pulled this from the 5 five pack cellos sold by the Ottawa mint in 2012. I bought 5 of these packs and pulled a total of 13 extra sails, including the MDD's here. I do not agree with that CCCS missed the boat on these. They are exactly as described. Regardless, I have not seen any other Shannon's with any type of doubling, machine or other, before. Nor has any been reported on the coins and canada site.

Memory lapse a couple of days ago. MDD could also be for Master Die Doubling , which would mean all Shannon toonies are affected to some degree, in this case the added value is exactly 0, even less collectible than an MD example. All 2006 nickels have MDD, not noted on any holder anywhere, as it is the default standard, it is not a variety. I still don't understand why CCCS would note MDD on the holder whether it denotes Machine Doubling or Master Die doubling. Don't have any of these coins handy right now to check.

Well, it's NOT a double die, so they were wrong from the start. There is some minor Machine Doubling, in my view, and that really doesn't fall into the DD category.
