I picked these 2 coins up in a silver dime bag lot at an auction yesterday. Was hoping someone could give me a grade and value. I really don't know the first thing about canadian coins.

Also am I correct in assuming they are silver?

Hi fiddler

First of all... yes, they are silver.

The first coin - 1908 has 2 different varieties for that date. A lg 8 and sm 8 variety. We would need a clear close up of the date to really pick that out for you. The value varies depending on which you have. As for grade? I would say thats a hard one. The portrait side is less worn than the other but I would say F-VF

The second coin - 1918 I would grade at around G-VG. Charlton value of $2 - $3

Im sure some others will come along to verify (or not) these grades just to have more than one opinion.

ok so that makes a difference.

first coin 1908 would be at best a VG. I would still need a closeup image of the date to see if I can tell which variety it is. But the book value for small 8 would be $10 and large 8 would be $30

second coin would be VF and book value would be $7

I don't know how others decide value differential from catalogue to fair market value but I usually stick to around 50% of book value. Until they reach much higher grades anyway.

I agree with Malissa, and can add:

1908: .925 silver, 1.16g, diametre 15.5mm, its probably a small 8 because large 8's are quite rare and your 8 has even thickness all over whereas the large 8 is thick and thin; mintage was 1,197,780 for both types; bullion value is about $0.50.

1918: nice coin, good toning, almost a EF-40, same composition as the 1908, mintage 6,052,289. I'd pay $5 for it.

Don't clean them.

... just an interesting note. 1908 was the year the Royal Canadian Mint opened for business. Prior, the coins were struck in England. The 1908 dated coins were the first year for the RCM/Canadian production.

1908-1998 and 1908-2008 90th and 100th anniversary comemmoratives were struck by the RCM. They are/were comparatively priced to the real thing... of which I prefer. I put together my own set of 1908, with the grade getting progressively worse from cent to 50 cent piece, cuz the 50 center is outrageously expensive in higher grades, and of course less common. There was no dollar coin produced in 1908.

I will go take a peek at it. :) But it might be helpful to post in the world coin grading section so that everyone else can pipe up their opinions too. That post seems to have quit a few different coins posted.

Itookalook... WOW

I usually only grade my own stuff cuz I ain't that good at it and would hate to make a mistake on someone else's stuff... But that's AU something... niiice!

>>> edit. VVV The band on the crown is originally weakly struck. If it's still discernable, you have a very lightly circulated coin. Hence, my AU opinion, but others are more experienced and I'd like to see their opinion as well.

Incidentally, the nickname for these small five cent silvers is "fish scales", owing to their size and how they look when shiny.
