Cartwheel 2 Pence Restrike? - Coin Community Forum

cedargrove Valued Member Canada 138 Posts	Posted 10/10/2025 12:02 pm I recently picked up this 2 Pence, and in my research learned that they were also restruck in 1848. Mine is in very good condition, with no edge dings, which suggests it did not circulate much, hence I suspect it's a restrike. Mine also weighs 55.6 grams, versus the standard 56.7 grams (exactly 2 ounces). I realize this is a small difference, but the original 1797 strikes were generally very close to full weight of pure copper. Considering the dimensions of mine are spot-on, the weight differential could be explained by ~10% zinc or tin. I wonder if the 1848 re-strikes were done on brass/bronze? Any thoughts? I would also pretty much expect provenance with all of the restrikes. A core feature of the restrikes was the smoothing and filling of the edges post strike which is a characteristic of all the restrikes. Not 100% but I believe they were all also Bronzed copper proofs. Here is one that passed through London Coin Autions. The difference between the standard strike and the restrikes is night and day. Nice coin nevertheless Report this Post to the Staff

I sold it and picked up a slightly worse 2 pence that weighs the full 56.7 grams. I'm happy I at least had professional photos taken of my orignal coin. I'll be attending a coin show next weekend, and might be able to buy back my original coin. Report this Post to the Staff
