My first early U.S. coin was a 1808 Capped Bust half dollar. It was my first large, early coin and I still own it today. As a result, I have a predilection for this issue. New pick up. Thoughts? Thanks!

VG10 as well. Pics are a little blurry, but seems to have nice eye appeal for the grade.

Thanks for your comments. I was looking at some coins at VG10 and came across the darker coin below. I think that it is an example of the O-106 variety and very similar in condition. The coins look similar but I don't think it is the same coin.

Initially I thought that the line above Liberty's cap was a scratch, but this other coin has the same scratch in the same location. What are the odds that the same scratch occurred in both coins or is it a feature imparted by the same die?

Agree that is is a die defect. Reminds me of the 1817 comet head CBH.

Yes, I looked at the maibbock plate coin for O-106 and didn't see that line but I went to the image of O-106a, the late die state of the die pair and found that line above the cap to be the north end of a huge terminal die crack across the length of the entire obverse. Interestingly, the crack only shows up in my coin above the cap, so it must be an intermediate stage of obverse die failure where it has split from the edge to the devices but hasn't actually fully failed.
