In particular, I am interested to know if this coin would straight grade with that obverse gouge. On a modern coin, I would say no, but when I look through PCGS TrueView, I see lots of Flying Eagle cents in the Fine to Very Fine grades (and above) with notable circulation scrapes and scratches.

It doesn't look cleaned to my eye, but I am just learning vintage copper.

I think you are fine. The one area you highlighted is in the legend and a non issue IMO. The mark below the eagles tail is in a focal area and even then I think it is a non issue. It appears to be a nice circulated coin.

This coin would not details but I'd be looking for a steep discount if I were interested. Unless the discount was really steep, I would avoid this coin. It is a shame because the coin is very well and evenly struck which is unusual for these hard copper nickel alloy coins which required hardening of the dies that didn't exist at the time. Still, why buy this coin when better examples can be had?

I appreciate the grading feedback. I has really helped me to discuss actual coins. The books and online videos are too general to get at the nuances.

NS, what is the price of those nicer examples? I paid about $100 for this FEC. The recent sales on ebay show a few specimens sold. There was one PCGS graded F15, but it has a rather large lamination flaw right through the showcase feature. If they were side by side (ignoring the slab), would the market find the lighter coin with the lamination flaw preferable to the dark coin with the minor scrapes?

I haven't been in the market for a while, but here is one I picked up a couple of years ago for about the same price. Maybe these have gone up a lot in the last couple of years, I don't know.

It should straight grade - I've seen worse on a flying eagle that did.

It's a crapshoot. Historically graders have been pretty loose on these vintage coins. Solid VF in my opinion.
