Hi all,

I recently purchased this coin in an auction. It is referenced as a bronze from Syros (Cyclades). Size 11,4 mm ; 1,8 gr.

But suddenly, I had a doubt, because this coins are very close in their appearance to those of Sardeis, with also Dinysos and a Kantharos.

Do you have views on this subject? Do you think that it is genuinely from Syros?

A quick acsearch of Syros Kantharos or Sardeis Kantharos gives you the what appears to be same coin for weight and dimensions. I find this CNG text they added to their listing, for this example below they sold, interesting:

"In previous sales, this issue has been variously attributed to either Cycladic Naxos or Syros. While both cities struck coins with the same types as on this issue, all of these cities' bronzes consistently bear the first two letters of their respective ethnic flanking the base of the kantharos. On this issue, however, these Greek letters have been replaced by two Lydian letters, allowing its correct attribution to a mint in Lydia. Sardes is a possibility, as it's spelling in Lydian was Sfard . (CNG would like to thank Costas Kanellopoulos for correcting the prior attributions, and pointing out Vögtli's publication of this issue.)"

By the way, search any of these cities and the letter to the left of the base seems to be the same so I am not sure what CNG sees here as differences. Like here is the Lydian Alphabet below: They Lydian F that looks like a figure 8.

Thank you for your very insightful answer. I received almost the same from a friend numismat working for Nomos. Yes, this type is definitely not from the Cyclades!
