It's just environmental toning. Might have been a metal detecting find. It was found and put back into circulation. No errors here.

I spent a lot of time resting on the reverse side, while the obverse side was exposed to the elements and allowed to tone out.

Not the 'silver' cannot be missing on nickels, as they are all one mixture of metals - no cladding or plating on them.

Oversize wording on the obverse?
Can you provide a closeup image of the areas you are talking about?

Sorry, I forgot to cover the question in your title (I went straight to the test in the body of your topic.

So, Pete had brought forward a question, - can you provide a better image of the lettering you mentioned?

Not sure what you mean by "oversize wording".
They are all struck from the same master die so there is
no way the wording can be larger unless it was a variety
of which there are none that year.
Also nickels are made from an alloy so there can not be
a missing layer. As explained, just artificial toning on one side.
Also your heading says it is a 2003D nickel, it is a 2003P.
