George III 1787 Indentations - Coin Community Forum

Summersun New Member United Kingdom 3 Posts	Posted 12/21/2025 11:58 am Hi everyone Can anyone help me to identify the indentations on the front and back of this coin? Also it looks to me that it was once worn as a broach? I like the idea that someone used to wear it with great pride Also, there are no hearts around the rearing horse. Which I believe is an error in the original minting. Any help with identifying what these oval indentations are would be gratefully received Thank you Report this Post to the Staff

NumisRob Bedrock of the Community United Kingdom 17878 Posts	Posted 12/21/2025 1:13 pm Hello and Your 1787 shilling has definitely been used as a brooch. I have a similar one with mount marks on it. I can't really explain the indentations. They may just be mindless vandalism, such as someone playing around with a sharp object. The 1787 shillings and sixpences exist both with and without hearts in the Hanoverian shield. Apparently The Royal Mint did make an error in not including the hearts, and later added them, but both types are about equally common.
