I received this coin in change a few days ago.

The inner half-inch or so of both sides appears to have been flattened somehow.

Any guesses as to what happened here?

Looks like it has been laying in the street for a while then picked up and used to buy something.

When a coin is damaged, usually it is impossible to say
exactly what happened unless you were there at the time.
I'm just saying it was damaged somehow.
