Am I correct in that this coin has been cleaned. Had to edit the seller's image and it brought out what you see.

If it has not been cleaned, what grade would you give the coin?

If it has how much (%) do you think the penalty might be?

Yes, harshly cleaned IMO.

Likely grades F12/F15 details, cleaned.

Even though it's a semi-key date, to me it's a bullion coin now, worth the weight of the silver.

I initially read "1894-S barber" and almost had a heart attack.

But yeah, F12 cleaned.

I think that this coin is fake. There are some markers that are not right on this coin. To start, we look at WE at the top of the obverse. Particularly the top serifs in the W and the E. In the subject coin, the top serif is five times thicker. Some flattening can occur, but in the E there is not enough metal where the vertical line meets the top serif to expand that widely.

The date looks wrong to me. In particular, the vertical line in the 4. In the subject coin, it is thinner than in the real coin below. But if you look at the diagonal line of the 4, it is thicker in the subject coin.

Look at the I in "IN GOD WE..." The bottom serif is extremely thick and there is not enough metal there to expand that thick.

The top feathers in the wings of the eagle are fully separated in the subject coin. Looks XF40 but the shield is weak in the reverse and other parts of the coin do not indicate an XF coin compared with a real VF30 coin reverse in the image below this one. The wear pattern is suspect.

Thanks everyone. It's nice to be able to ask questions like this. I was focused on cleaning and, now that they're pointed out I should have spotted them, particularly the date.
