Here's a connection story that extends beyond the classic-era of United States ("US") commemorative coins to find kindred spirits (of a sort) within the modern US commemorative coin series. The 1923 Monroe Doctrine Centennial (of Enunciation) Half Dollar was issued in support of the American Historical Revue and Motion Picture Historical Exposition which was held in Los Angeles, California from July 3 to August 4, 1923; the Los Angeles Clearing House served as the coin's financial sponsor and distributor. The 1923 Monroe Doctrine Centennial Half Dollar was the first US coin to include the inscription "LOS ANGELES" as part of its design. 1923 Monroe Doctrine Centennial Half Dollar Jumping ahead six decades, we find that each of the coins for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympiad feature a "LOS ANGELES" inscription within their designs. 1983 Los Angeles Olympiad Silver Dollar 1984 Los Angeles Olympiad Silver Dollar 1984 Los Angeles Olympiad Gold Eagle We may get additional "Los Angeles" coins in 2028 if Congress passes a 2028 US Paralympics/Olumpics coin bill (the Games are to be held in Los Angeles). Interesting connection, and causes me to ponder the following as a follow-up of sorts: Given that I can count 38 classic era commemorative coins with named locations as part of their legends, are there any other modern commemorative issues that also use these location? I need to do some research on that question as I'm not really familiar with the modern commemorative coins. But my suspicion is yes!

Well - I spent an enjoyable few hours surveying the entirety of modern US commemorative 1982 - 2022. I learned quite a bit from a very informative website. Quote: I eagerly await your report on what you find! And the answer is NO. At least not through 2022. I did find an interesting connection however within the modern commemorative series itself. The Montpelier Mansion in Virginia is named and shown on two separate issues: 1993 Bill of Rights Silver Dollar 1999 Dolly Madison Silver Dollar I also realize that the modern commemorative collector in 1995/1996 suffered through a flood of issues analogous to the commemorative craze years (centered around ~1936) in the classic commemorative series. The reason of course was an astonishing 16 coins to commemorate the Atlanta Olympics. I'm going to need to find some @commems writing that tells the story of how that collector abuse led to reforms in the modern commemorative series. I'm sure they exist somewhere in his excellent research and writing.

Very interesting! I bring this up every chance I get. I have the Monroe Doctrine half dollar. Commems was the first person I showed it to because I bought it from a vendor at the coin show we were both attending.
