In October 1950, the Roanoke Island Historical Association ("RIHA") put a small quantity of original Roanoke Colony half dollars (likely less than 1,000) on sale for $4.50 each. (In 1937, the coins were sold for $1.50 each.) The coins had been stored in a vault of the Bank of Manteo (North Carolina).

C.S. Meekins, the then-current Treasurer of the RIHA, was responsible for the processing/management of coin orders and their fulfillment.

The available coins were advertised in the American Numismatic Association's [i]The Numismatist{/i] as "Virginia Dare Half Dollars" as part of a "limited number of the remaining stock of these coins as part of the 10th season of 'The Lost Colony,' Paul Green's symphonic drama."

It was a rare opportunity to secure an original coin from its initial source years after issue, and collectors flocked to the opportunity..

Interesting story, thanks for sharing.

As a related tangent, this 1950 distribution makes the "Virginia Dare Half Dollar' (I like the ANA description) the first of two classic era half dollars to undergo a delayed re-distribution.

The second to do so was a distribution of ~500 of the 1946 Iowa halves in 1996, with an additional 500 planned for distribution in 2046.

Is there a third (or more) coin(s) to add to this story of later classic era distributions?

The 1918 Illinois Statehood Centennial Half Dollar comes to mind, though the coins weren't offered directly to collectors in 1933.

For a few details, see:

I'll give the question some further thought and see if I come up with any others.

Yes, of course. I went back and re-read your story of Roosevelt's 1933 Bank Holiday and how some of these were released into circulation 15 years after they were minted.

It's likely that is where my well worn example originated.

Not to quibble over nuances - but it strikes me that 'released into circulation' is different than 'offered to collectors' at a later distribution.

I believe a large number of unsold Stone Mountain halves were also released into circulation. Granted, in this case it was not 15 years later.

This is an interesting thought exercise that I should know more about given my long time interests in the circulated examples from the classic silver commemorative era.

The 1920 Maine Statehood Centennial Half Dollar was available for sale to collectors for $1.00 each for years after the Centennial.

IMO, pure circulation drops are a different category, regardless pf their date.
