I am just starting to metal detect and was wondering where everyone started. I have done my yard and have detected a few times at the beach. But is detecting prohibited at public places like parks. There are alot of farms where I live and I have been thinking about ringing there doorbell to see if they minded that I detecting on the farm but I guess I have felt too dumb to do it. Anyone have any good ideas of where to go. Thanks

I would definitely ask at the farms. If they say no thank them for their time and walk away. There is always a chance they will say yes. My mom used to say if you don't ask then they will never say yes. Just make sure not to tear up their property. Parks are usually good. Check with your parks and recreation dept. Mine typed up a letter saying it was ok just in case anyone questioned me looking. Although I have yet to show it to anyone.

Schools are a good place to look. Just don't look during the hours that the children are there. They tend not to like that, at least around here they don't. Wouldn't hurt to check with the principal if they are around. I have had only 2 tell me not without permission from the school administration. So I don't look there. Just haven't taken the time to go down to the school administration and talk to them. I don't get down to that part of town to often.
