not sure if these are examples of a large date and a small date.

These are both Large Dates.

thanks. seems the hook on the 9 is the better tell.

one of these seems to have that but just not enough.

I just go by the 7, if it is lower than the 0, it is a Large Date,
if it is even with the 0, it is a Small Date.

I agree as well.

In my experience, seeing a large and small side by side, the difference will jump out at you. There would be no question, IMHO.
