I don't see how a washing machine would do that.
It looks like some sort of damage. You can see a circle on both sides where the devices have been flattened.

To my eyes, it looks like damage from coin wrapper.

I see no signs of damage. It's either a grease strike or a slightly weak strike. I favor the latter hypothesis, based on the uniformity of the encircling band of weakness. The reeding would not necessarily show the effects of a strike that is only a little bit weak.
