Well, I filed a report with ebay on this and some other "tribute" auctions in which "copy" or "reproduction" didn't appear in the title or description. I haven't had a chance to check up on them, so this pulled auction is news to me. There's also a fair number of "tributes" and other undisclosed copies still out there. Lotsa work for us to do.

I looked at the auctions which I reported and none have been pulled except the one in the original post, so I don't think I had anything to do with its cancellation. The only differences between the auctions is/was different sellers and closing dates; the first was supposed to close today (13 Mar) I think while the others don't close for another five to seven days. I also don't know if ebay contacts a reportee and gives the seller the option to close it him/herself or ebay will close it for him/her. I'll be watching these auctions to see if action is eventually taken.

As follow-up, I did an advanced search on "tribute" in both description and title to see what would pop up. Well, over 700 auctions popped up although perhaps 75% were for Elvis (or whoever), were tokens, and/or included "copy", "replica", or "reproduction" somewhere in the title or description. Given the numbers, I couldn't wade through all of them, but I reported six more auctions for copy coins: 3964027599, 3964123250, 3962851072, 3962875142, 3962913148, and 3962967922. These all end sometime today. If someone wants to take the time to go through more, I did the first three pages. The problem is each auction needs to be examined closely and a value judgement made as to whether or not the seller is attempting a deceit. If there's a good photo of the reverse of the copy coin or the description doesn't make an overt attempt to pass the coin as an original, I gave him/her the benefit of the doubt and didn't report him/her. I reported only those I thought were intentionally deceptive. A couple trends seem to be emerging. First, some of the sellers are not coin dealers; rather, they are antiques or novelty dealers who happen to have a few replica coins. It is entirely possible they are unaware of ebay's "copy" policy regarding coins. Second, I noticed a lot of other sellers are trying to use the word "tribute" in lieu of the words "copy" or "replica"; further, with some exceptions, they seem to studiously avoid clear pictures of coins' reverses with "copy" embossed. To me, these are deceptive practices.

I emailed the seller last night and he ended the auction early. This seller does not sell coins and had no idea that they were reproductions. ebay had nothing to do with it. There really are honest sellers out there that are happy if someone lets them know about errors.

Hi All, Thanks for the feedback on both of the posts about this set of Tribute coins. I am new to ebay and seem to read endless comments in other forums and media about scams on ebay. If I run into something that seems out of order I will take the steps suggested before making a "Witch Hunt" type of posting that it seems I did here. I am going to e-mail the seller with an explanation and apology. My intent was to help, not harm. Mike Copied from original post.....Here's a copy of the e-mail I sent...Dear hoosierantiques, I am one of the people that complained about an auction you had for a 1936 Tribute set of coins. I posted this complaint on a Coin Forum without looking into the matter and was quite embarrassed when our forum administrator explained your actions and innocence in the manner it was posted. I am new to ebay and have read about scams and thought this one was. I will not jump the gun again and have posted an apology on the forum I raised the complaint on. I hope this caused you no harm, Sincerly, RMKardes
