The city of Leontini was founded in 729 BC by settlers from Naxos. It is virtually the only Greek settlement in Sicily that was not located on the coast, but was founded about ten kilometers inland.
Originally inhabited by the Sicels, the site was taken over by the Greeks due to its strategic location overlooking the fertile plain to the north.
After various captures, the city was finally conquered by Marcus Claudius Marcellus in 214 BC.
