While CRH, I ran across a weakly struck nickel with a remaining protorim. It is 5.03g, but the coin appears visibly much thinner than ordinary nickels. I know that might be because of the convex outer surface compared to a fully squared off rim. It got me wondering just how much vertical rim thickness is gained from displaced metal during the strike.

Since some of you have unstruck planchets in your collections, could you post a thickness comparison of the post-upset mill planchet vs. a struck coin?

Good question, you would think it's possible the rim thickness/height would increase somewhat due to the strike.

Or, someone with a blank (I don't have one) can send me one and I'll measure it.

My speculation is that the rims will be nearly the same thickness, but a bit shorter on the planchet. The way that the protorim curves back makes it look slimmer, but I'm not sure that completely explains the height difference.
