hi hhb. I just thought I would mention that there are two obverse varieties known for that year.
Obverse 4 and obverse 5

this information is from the Charest variety guide.

Obverse 4 (1884-1886) The forehead of the queen is round and so is her chin
Obverse 5 (1885-1894) The upper lip of the queen is bigger than the lower one, a double chin appears, and the queen's forehead is straight.

For anyone collecting Canadian coins I would recommend the Charest guide. It can be paid for by paypal, and can either be mailed to you in hard copy or downloaded right away as a PDF file. for $20 is has quite a lot of useful information that I have not seen in my other Canadian guides.

sorry, since this was asking for grades, I would say VF at best.

Thank you all..
it sort of confirmed my ideas .. I woul personally grade it a F15 and would however very happy accept a 20...
Mallissa, it is the obv 5. It can also be recognized on the inside shape of the ear.
This coin was a very good buy, together with a 1925 nickel...less than 150 CAN $.
thanks
HHB

hello HHB, we all know if sent to ICCS for sure no more than VF20 .. Way to much wear in the hair and the rev is also lacking sufficient detail to make a higher grade... PCGS might go Vf30
