here is a pair of 1981P Lincoln's. the one on the right, is a normal appearing 81. (no shock to anyone - I'm sure). the one on the left, is actually "brassy" in color. I have read recently on this forum, about "brass" cents. could this be one of them? if so - does it have any collector value, or premium value. thanks.

The term "brass cent" only applies to post-1982 Zincolns. It is caused by zinc planchets being left in the plating tank, slowly dissolving, and then incorporating into the copper wash- copper + zinc= yellow brass. I have seen many people purport to have a brass cent but it is usually a case of toning and not brass plating. Ken Potter is a retailer of brass cents and he has a letter from the Mint's Assay Division posted on his site regarding the subject.

I thought that the earlier coins were made of brass, copper + zinc = brass.

True- technically, the cents from the 1960s-1982 were a type of brass since the tin was omitted but they were not yellow brass which has a higher zinc content. Prior to the 1960s, all "copper" small cents and Two Cents were bronze- 95% Cu, 5% Zn/Sn. The brass plated Zincolns are supposed to be different because they are plated with yellow brass which gives them a distinctive color. If the zinc content of the plating was low, the color would be almost indistinguishable from a normal "red" copper plated cent.

As for your coin dbrablec, it is just a toning transition/mellowing from red to brown. I have seen that shade on a number of Lincolns, typically ones that have been lightly handled. With extensive circulation, the coins just go straight to the standard brown color.
