Can anyone inform me about South African Proof sets? I have a 1967 set with the silver 1 Rand and I think the mintage is 1000 sets. Why are these sets so low in value considering the low number produced? No market for them?

Coins are subject to the law of supply and demand. Even with a mintage of only 1000 (a low supply), very few people want this item (demand is very low). Personally, I'd absolutely love having a mintage 1000 item. One of my earliest finds was a 1906 50c from Liberia with a mintage of 24,000. Certainly a low mintage coin for a circulation strike. However, it is only worth a small amount (though definitely more than the 20c I paid). How many people care about this coin? Well, I do cause I found it in this manner.

I just looked, there were three different proof sets issued in 1967 in South Africa. The proof set comprised of the gold coins had a mintage of 1000, however, there were 25000 of the nongold containing sets.

Finally, crain300, your replies make no sense and seem sort of insulting, but it's too hard to tell what you're really saying.

Thank-you Jays-Dad, unfortunately I have one from the 25,000, oh well - now I can see the value.
