I need everone's opinion on whether my' 1853 Three Cent Silver piece has scratches across the Obverse or are they "Struck Thru Errors"! I am leaning towards Struck Thru pieces of wire as their beginnings in the Shield are blunt and there are no ridges on either side to indicate metal displacement which is normal evidence of a scratch or a gouge.

See the pictures at the attached links. I am sorry for the quality of the pictures! I do not have a decent setup and the pictures come out mainly somewhat yellowish but sometimes with other hues.

I'm not a pro at this, but how they vary in width is what makes me think they are scratches. For your sake I hope I'm wrong!

The one side looks like a lamination error. The other, can we get a close-up of the 'R'?

rockdude,

Are these pics okay? As you can see, they look sort of like scratches but appear more like the coin was Struck Thru two different sizes of wire.

I'll guess that was either a flaw in the planchet or happened after mintage. My expertise (so-called) ends at about there, lol. More experienced eyes will be welcome... I'm eager to hear what they think!

A common struck through is a piece of wire and it's usually mistaken for a scratch and this could be either.
