I found this token in my yard metal detecting. I have found several interesting finds here including a late 1800s/early 1900s City/County Police cuff button and pre 1902 Kings Bros Mfg Furniture token. From what research I have done so far, I think this is from the 1920s, that is just a guess.

The date Aug 14 is clear but as you see where the year is there is a hole. Also on the reverse the hole took out the name of the state but I think it starts with an S. I found this in Ohio so I assumed it was for this state. The token reads as follows:

Obverse: "May You Live A Long Time, Prosper and vote for Harry M Carpenter for State Senator on Aug 14- ?". Hole takes out year!

Reverse: Your Support and Influence At The republican Primaries
Harry M Carpenter State Senator

The token was pretty corroded and at first only Carpenter was readable. I figured it was just a advertising token from a local Carpenter. The this morning I was putting some of my finds away and figured I would try the dremel and a fine wire brush to clean some of the corrosion off. Well it worked pretty well. Sorry for the pictures not being that great, but you can see the token pretty well.

Hopefully someone has some ideas about this item. I have been searching for hours and haven't found a thing on Harry M Carpenter in politics or the US senate. Appreciate any information some one can give me.

Wow! In your yard? That's a nice find.

From the coin lettering and details, it looks to me like a souvenir from the late 1800s.

Did a little research on this Harry M Carpenter and found out he was elected to the Ohio House of Representitives in 1921. Other then that I haven't found out any thing about him running for Senate. Could have been before this date or after. I do have a base to start building some history on this gentleman now. Now I am interested in his life ater all the research.

Got more information on this token. Harry Carpenter was born in 1879 in Jefferson county Ohio. He served three terms in the House of Representitives and was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1924, 1926 and 1928. I believe this token is from is 1928 campaign for two reasons.

First off the date on the token is the same date as the 1928 primaries of Aug 14th. Second, this house was built in 1927 and would have been likely to be lost during the campaign in 28. To back the soil was so hard on it.

Some interesting facts about his man. He is believed to be the first Senator to chair both the Republicain and Democratic houses of Finances. He was elected as a State representitive for Ohio in 1918, 20 and 22. Then Elected as an Ohio Senator in 24, 26 and 28. He passed away in on Feb 25th 1929 just after being elected to his fourth term.

I am going to try and find a family member as I have quite a bit of information and see if any of them are in politic now. One of them might really like having this.

That a really nice one. The only area not showing on mine was the last two digits of the year..28. We figured it ws a 28 as that was the only year with an august date on the token. Nice find and thinks for the info.
