i think is made of zinc not nickel
ta piece elle est faite de zinc pas de Nickel! fait le test avec l aimant et tu va voir , le zinc n est pas magnetique
il on change la composition des cent en 1997 de copper il etais , on change pour zinc plaque copper ! je croi ton example n a pas de plaquage

Hi again, I just see in another post, the member 1945V tell : 1) Two versions have the mint logo ( RCM): one magnetic (steel core copper plated) and one non-magnetic (zinc core copper plated) 2) Two versions have no mint mark, one magnetic (steel core copper plated) and one non-magnetic (zinc core copper plated) 3) 2006 with P mint mark is magnetic (steel core copper plated) It is only for the penny ? Wich year exactly ? If someone can explain to me clearly all the variety I appreciate... or it can be talk in another post too ? To come back to my piece it's not magnetic without any mark. It's easy to enderstand the the plated are omitted. Now, does anyone have a idea of the value ? it is easy to find ? Thanks again ! |

Hello Yves, Only three types of metals are magnetic; nickel, steel (iron) and cobalt (not found in coins). Starting in 1997, the mint stopping making copper pennies (as the price of copper rose). From 1997-2000, pennies were made from copper plated zinc (non-magnetic). Most 2001 pennies were copper plated zinc (non magnetic). There is a few that are copper plated steel (and have a letter P under the queen's effigy). In 2002-2005, pennies were made from both steel (indicated by a P) and zinc (non magnetic) indicated by no markings. In 2003, 4 varieties exist; old queen effigy (with crown) and new queen efficy (no crown) in both steel and zinc. And as you know from my previous post, 5 versions of 2006 pennies exist. The new logo ( RCM) started appearing on some pennies in 2006. 2007 to the present, only magnetic (steel) pennies with the new logo ( RCM) exist. |

Like nobody can help me more for the moment with my " mystery pieces" someone know a specialist in error ?

yves Therefore the piece is not nickel... as mentioned it is most likely a zinc piece that was not properly plated or that somehow lost it's plating. It may have also been "plated" by someone after it left the mint. Look around the edges for a colour change to try to see if there is evidence of it being re-coated with anything. A good quality large picture of it would be good. The varieties are well explained here for the penny and there are similar threads to do with the 5 & 10 cent pieces. A Charlton catalogue sounds like it would be a good investment for yourself... a book of Canadian coinage, or check your library. Hi ! It's ok for the zinc, now I enderstand. There is some picture, the color are not perfect due to the lightening, in real the piece look like any 5¢ or any other pieces. Hello Yves, In regards to other coins 5 cents 1) pre-1982 are pure nickel 2) 1982 to 1999 are cupronickel alloy (25% nickel, 75% copper) like Ámerican 5 cent coins. Cupronickel is non-magnetic, despite the nickle content. 3) Cupronickel is used in some 5 cent coins from 2000 to 2006 (with no markings) 4) Starting in 2000 to 2006, coins with a "P" marking are nickel plated steel 5) Starting in 2006 to the present, " RCM" marked coins are nickel plated steel 10, 25, 50 cents 1) 2000 and earlier are pure nickel 2) Some 2000 and all 2001 and after are nickel plated steel (with "P" or " RCM" markings) $1 (1987 to date) are bronze plated with a nickel core $2 (1996 to date) coins have the following composition Outer ring 100% Ni Inner core 92% Cu, 6% Al, 2% Ni |

"1945V" thanks a lot it's a precious information for me.
If I remember in the year around 1999-2000 the proof like set have a mark of winnipeg and no mark. do you have more precision about this special mark ? In this range of year like a want to have all I must buy 2 set by year to have the winnipeg and the standard set, it is already the same thing ?

just to be sure... For the 10¢, 25¢ and 50¢ in 2000 it have 3 version #1 no mark #2 "P" #3 " RCM" 2001 at date 2 version #1 "P" #2 " RCM" it is exact ? Thanks for you patience ! |
