This 1888 S Morgan is in XF condition. (I think it's a key date, or maybe semi-key date.) But at some point it had been polished. In the balance of things, how much does the polishing effect this coin's worth?

And is this considered a key date?

Wow that was cleaned pretty harshly. The PCGS price guide range for this coin goes from $145 in G4 to $945 in MS64...With a mintage of 657,000. I would definitely call it at least a semi-key.

I don't know how many have survived in total, or in XF45, or what the demand is like for this coin. I think the harsh cleaning will easily knock off 50% minimum. Serious collectors who pay big money for coins will usually stay away from cleaned coins, unless the coin is an absolute rarity. If demand is high, and survival low, the price may not be affected as much.

I agree the cleaning is going to reduce the value of this coin considerably.

I don't see this as XF. It looks AU at a minimum to me.

I would say the price of $168 is decent for this coin which was indeed cleaned harshly. CoinValues lists the coin as $300 in XF-45 take half of that and you get $150.

The coin looks really good in hand. I think the pics show the cleaning to be more harsh than it actually is.
