I have a gold medal or token I inherited from my father and can not find any information about it on the net. It is very small, 1 cm across, with a left facing profile with the text Vittorio on the left and the text Emanuele III on the right. On the other side of the coin is a robed woman with another figure behind her and dates that I believe are 1861-1911. There is no financial denomination on this medal/token, and I believe it is high gold content and it is very thin. An image of the face side of the coin can be found as item number 63 on this auction site (my token is not brushed)

and an image of the other side of the coin (mine has no denomination mark) can be found as lot no. 37 at this site

I have not been able to find this combination of images on the same token/coin. Does anyone know anything about this item such as it's classification (it is too thin to be a coin), rarity, or value?

Vittorio Emanuele II was king of Sardinia and some other territories, and - as from 1861 - king of the newly created Kingdom of Italy. Until that year Italy did not exist as a unified country. So I suppose that this is also the first of the two years on that medal - and "1861-1911" would then mean 50 years of unified Italy. Don't know anything about the possible value, sorry. With medals that is more difficult than with coins since basically everybody can have a medal made. But if yours is actually a gold piece, its value would at least be whatever its weight in gold is worth ...

Thanks Chrisild, I am guessing it is a commemorative then. I have also found references on the net to "the two goddesses" which I think are the figures on the other side of this medal.

I have taken this item to a jeweller and had it weighed at .20 grams have been told that it is approx. 22k gold and that it is possibly the type of item that may have been put in champagne glasses when there was a celebration. I still need to take it to a coin dealer as everyone I ask values it on gold value only.

With gold at approx $30.00US per gram(close enough, rounded off and easy to remember). The gold content only value is approx $5, if solid.

But, there is now a plethora of 10mm 0.2gram gold plated fantasy/wedding/gift tokens representing all manner of countries and denominations and impossible die types*(so as not to be a copy of legal tender?). An ebay search of "mini gold" or "hge gold" or "small/tiny gold" or such will yield some examples.

I am not familiar with yours but I don't really look for these items, but stumble on new types from time to time. Older varieties can indeed be solid gold, but these often have a purity mark of some sort. And anything solid over 8kt is supposed to be legally marked(modern). New plated varieties are of course unmarked. When acid testing, a small edge mark(scratch!) is made to check the deeper metal.

I know nothing of this history, but is it the III or the II?

The man depicted on the medal is Vittorio Emanuele III. Number Two, so to say, was the ruler when the kingdom was founded (1861) - and Number Three was king at the time of the jubilee (1911) ...

It is Emanuelle the III. It is so small I originally thought it was the II. I took it to an antique shop after the jeweller and he did mention that it was the type of item put in champagne glasses during celebrations. As far as a gold mark there is a tiny bar on the non face side but whatever is written on it is too small to read.

Thank you IBGolden I did check on ebay and this one seems to be a great example including the rough edge. But this one says brass and mine is gold.
