Dear All,

Any thoughts on what a 1909 US five dollar Indian Head gold coin might be worth? Looks to be in extremely fine condition to my untrained eye. My wife inherited it from her grandad and she is curious to know!

Many thanks,

Bedrest

Thanks, The coin is marked with a D. Roughly what would its value be?

Hi Bedrest

Welcome to the forum !!

Does your coin have a mint mark ?

D, O or S a coin without a mint mark is a Philadelphia coin.

Im not a gold buyer but these coins are highly collectable with a great many folks looking for them .

2006 Krause lists tHem like this in XF

1909 250.00
1909-D 250.00
1909-O 3,350.00
1909-S 275.00

The O mint is obviously the more rare coin, Keep in mind that being made from gold these price can and do fluctuate to a certian degree.

a good way to find what the market is doing with these coins is by searching ended auction prices on ebay, heritage, and other rare coin auction sites.

Feel free to post pics of your coin ,, we can help with grading opinions !!

Hope this helps !! and I hope your coin is an O mint !!!

Rick

IF in XF condition as you state (XF40 to be more exact), grey sheet has a bid value of $260 & an ask value of $275. A picture of the beauty would of course help. Grey sheet does not distinguish bwt mint marks (unfortunately). Obviuosly the the lower the mintage the more valuable. The above prices are only a "starting" point.---Post a pic will ya... BTW,welcome to our forum--

Here you go. no mint mark so I assume it's a Philadelphia coin. Let me know what a more expert eye makes of the grade.

Hi Bedrest

I think I see a mint mark on the coin ,, it looks like a D , The location is on the reverse of the coin left left edge just at the end of the branch.

Im notorious for over grading Gold coins, but I'm my opinion the coin could go AU.

Welcome to our CC family!

The obverse looks AU to me, but the reverse looks like EF. These particular coins are the only ones that were minted with the incuse design. These are highly collectable. I have found that book values on these coins don't mean much. In my opinion, this coin would sell in the $235-240 range on ebay.
