What follows is a copy of the e-mail I received from Q.David Bowers just before FUN this year. He takes a lot of hits for being for the "Big Guys" but made this little guy happy with his response!!!!!Mike

Dear Robert,
Thanks so much for your nice words. I’ll share this with editor Beth Deisher.I’m getting ready to head off to Florida for a week and hasten to answer your comments. Keep reading Coin World and, hopefully, keep finding my columns interesting and useful! All good wishes for a great 2005. DAVE BOWERS

Mr. Bowers,
Your Dec. 20th and 27th 2004 columns published in " Coin World" magazine have helped restore my faith in collecting. I am a life long collector and could not have expressed more clearly than you did the joy of owning Early American Coins in less then Mint State condition. I have always enjoyed handling these coins (properly of course!) and dreaming about the possibility of whose hands may have touched them throughout history. I have purchased "slabbed" coins in circulated condition mainly for authentication and have "busted them out" once I got them home. Old slabbed coins make me feel like I'm looking at an animal in the zoo, sort of like through the bars! Raw coins that I can handle make me feel as if I'm seeing them for the first time in the wild! I respect and understand the side of collecting high-grade slabbed coins. I attempted this on a small scale about 12 years ago and ended up selling off my higher end slabs to begin a second assault on getting back as close as possible many of the early American coins I had sold to purchase the high grades. I'm still having a ball doing this and I've never regretted it! Thanks for the years of dedication you have given to one of the finest hobbies on earth. Happy New year! Sincerely, Robert Kardes

P.S. Thanks for the tip on the "Gobrecht Journal"

Awesome! Mr. Bowers' column is what I miss most from CoinWorld. I didn't renew my subscription when it expired late last year, mostly in protest of the CoinWorld forum ending. He really is one of the good guys!

I saw Dave Bowers at the F.U.N show. I wanted to shake hands with him but he was chatting with someone and by the time I got done buying stuff I was too tired to go back. I work at nights and had to get out of there and get some sleep. Dave Bowers may be a big dealer but I think he's a collector at heart. Check out the ad token that he and Jim Ruddy issued in their early days.

Well most know my admiration of Q. David Bowers. I have dealt with the man many times over the years, and he certainly goes out of his way to help collectors.

One thing though......What am I chump change?

Hi crew!
This was actually the second time I got an e-mail response from him. After all the smoke of big business clears, I agree that he is a collector at heart. I just got his new book "United States Gold Coins An Illustrated History". I have not read it yet but thumbed through it and I tell you it is beautiful, tons of illustrations and history galore!Mike

I have to agree whole-heartedly that he is not only one of the 'Big Guys'...but one of the 'Good Guys' in this hobby. He truly enjoys the emails and feedback from us 'everyday collectors' as a way of keeping a pulse on the hobby.

As for books, he has recently released another in the RedBook series...A Guidebook of United States Type Coins as well as a 2nd edition of the Morgan RedBook. Necessary additions to my library

I definitely have to agree that the "Big Guys" write back. Geez, National Dealer is one of them and we're lucky enough to have him active on our forum - it doesn't get any better than that!
