OK, so I decided to start yet another collection without finishing the other 4 I am currently working on. This new endeavor involves world coins with a nautical theme - primarily ships.

I thought about this while going through a lot of foreign coins my dad gave me years ago. Most of them are European from the early 20th century. The ones that really jumped out at me are the Portuguese coins. What a work of art these are!

And given the fact that you can normally buy world coins by the pound for next to nothing (I have to remain frugal right now with this hobby I enjoy so much), I thought it would be fun to see how big of a collection I can piece together while following a nautical theme. But how would I store something like that? The coin sizes will vary greatly so it's not like I can just put them in a standard album. I guess my best bet would be the cardboard holders placed in plastic pages in an album.

Any other thoughts for this?

That is weird. I have though of doing a collection like that before.
I think flips in the pages would be best.

Sound like an obvious case of Hobby attention disorder.
Not to worry, other than lighter pockets, it isn't fatal (depending on your wife)
However, it does seem to be highly contagious

It does sound like a good theme though.
I would agree, flips in the pocket pages.
I would say get D ring binders though, as the normal round ring bind could damage the 2x2's or possibly the coins.

Explanation---when the pages are put into a ring binder, they have the tendency to follow the ring. thus, sliding under them causing damage.(at the rings)
It happens more frequently when books are over filled, or in the large ring books.

I think that is a great idea. I hope to see some pics of the coins you get for that collection.

I too have a hugh pile of foriegn coins. Most have been placed in appropriate sized 2x2's. A few are to large so they just went into plastic flips. Then the 2x2's are placed in those plastic sheets that hold 20 2x2's. I attempted to place them in those pages by country so that each country has separate pages from others. Then by size per page so that the smallest coins are at the beginning. These plastic pages go into 3 ringed binders, put on a book shelf.
I've also got a large quantity of them in 2x2's in those Whitman Red Boxes for 2 rows of 2x2's due to I've got no idea or what they are, where they are from, etc.
This all started a long time ago. The organizations I've worked at usually have people from all over the world and I always make it known I collect coins. This usually gets me a lot of free coins from all over the world. People usually tell me what they are and where they are from but by the time I get home, that is usually forgotten so into the 2x2's for now.

And as to starting a new collection while working on others. You would be amazed at how that grows. Well after 60 years of coin collecting I have possibly over 100 types of coin collections going all at the same time.

I like the 2x2 sheet pages myself, that way each time you open the binder 20 coins the obverse and reverse are there for the viewing and showing.

I like the 2x2s and sheet pages. You can easily view and arrange/rearrange them. You can also leave room for the ones that you plan on acquiring.

can anyone recommed a manufacturer of folders/inserts/2x2s? I'm a brand new collector, just spent money on the Numis system, only to find they use PVC in the pages, so am looking for something a bit safer.

Cheers, Chris
