Started cracking some more proof sets that I bought at a show today. In particular is a 1973 set in a hinged display case. Question is how do I get the lens out of the plastic frame that holds it w/o breaking the frame? I would like to keep the case intact, but if I have to crack the frame I will.

The early proof case are glued and sealed. When you open them, they will crack. Been there done that! The newer proof sets are not glued and open much easier.

I used a utility knife (with a fresh blade) when I broke apart all of my early proof sets. Extreme patience is the key.

Not sure why you would want to save the case but that is truly difficult. I've broke open many of them and just threw away the plastic pieces. I usually use a saber saw and cut off all the edges so no peices flying around.

I want to try to keep it intact as I only want the the Ike for my album, so I thought maybe someone else would like the remaining coins in the case. OK I will give this a try..... ....I did it, I got the Ike out without breaking the frame but I cracked the lens Oh well, the Ike will have a good home in my Dansco.

Agree, no way to open with out cracking. I some times am able to get a butter knife in enough to start unsealing around the top glued area. however more than not the plastic case cracks and breaks.
