This was discussed in another thread, but I want to recycle the question. Does the French 2 Francs KM#886a.2 listed in Krause with a mintage of 170,000 really exist today? Does anyone have an example in their collection? I've been looking for several years and cannot even find a photo of one. It's always shown with the 1945 date. Krause doesn't list a price for this one. Below is a photo of KM#886a.1 in my collection. The coin in question is the same, but with a "B" on the bottom reverse between the cornucopia. Thanks for the assistance -- Terrell

Gforce: You have made my day brighter (That's pretty sad isn't it)! What price did you pay for the coin and where did you find it.
Great picture and welcome to the forum.

I got so excited at your picture, I forgot one small detail. I did that once a coin show, the 2x2 was labeled 1916, but coin was 1915 (seller refunded my money later). The coin in the photo is not dated 1944. I have found the usual date is 1945, but yours is a 1946. So my hunt continues to verify that a 1944B coin exists. Maybe, I should make this a contest or not I do appreciate the quick response Gforce. Terrell

Hmm, the Schön catalog does not list such a piece. Just Paris (1941, 1944-50, 1958-59), Beaumont ("B", 1945-50) and Castelsarrasin ("C", 1945). And CGB/Numishop (not actually a catalog but a site with a huge selection) does not list it either ...

G'day, I have "Monnaies Francaises" 16th edition, 2003, by Victor GADOURY.
There were quite few types of deux-francs in 1944: 535 Morlon, which is like the one in your pics, Br-Al, 8g, 1931~1941; 536 Bazor, Al, 2.2g, 1943 & '44, various mintmarks; 537 France Libre, Philadelphia, Br-Al, 8g, 1944 only; montage 50m; 538 Morlon, again like the one in your pics, Al, 2.2g, 1941~1959
Type 536 mintages were: no mm 25.5m 1944B 10.2m 1944C 19.4m
Type 538 has mintmarks B & C for 1945 & '46, but no mintmarks for 1944. Gadoury gives a mintage of 7.2m.
That would be an interesting set to put together.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, it's a nice set and that's why I'm looking to see if there is one more that exists. Here's the set minus the KM#886a.1 in the first post: Reverse for KM#901----------------------------------------------------------------- KM#901.1 KM#904.2-------------------------------------------------------------------------- KM#904.3 KM#905 -- Military Issue minted in Philadelphia So this is the reason for the question. I used Krause to determine obverse & reverse. Do I have it correct? Terrell

I don't know how to match the Krause number, but cgb has several 1946B 2 francs listed, up to AU55 grade. Here's a link to one in low grade for 4.80 euros. http://www.numishop.com/fiche-fmd_1...um_1946.htmlThe Collection Ideale of all French modern coins does not show a 1944B in the Morlon design (F.269). Here is a link to a 1944 without the mintmark: http://www.collection-ideale-cgb.ne...p?numero=269Finally, Le Franc does not catalog a 1944B, and they're sticklers for accuracy on all French coinage. If they can't find one in existence, they offer a cash reward for a photo, and if no one can produce that they drop the coin from their catalog. If a real 1944B Morlon exists it is a very special coin.

Hey, thq, How far back do they go? I have a couple French coins that are not mentioned in Krause: 12 Sols 1763 Grenoblie Mint (Z) 1 ECU 1739 Besancon Mint(CC)

Neither Gadoury or Le Franc goes back before the Revolution, and I haven't gone looking for a good French guide to royals. I'm sure one exists. However, cgb is a trove of information and pictures. You can first look through what royals they are selling. I didn't see any Grenoble 12 sols, but they do have a 1737 Besancon ecu listed: http://www.numishop.com/fiche-bry_1...er_1737.htmlThis one's pretty rough at 150 euros. I'd guess that a nice one from that period would run up into the hundreds of euros. With considerably more effort, you can go through all their auction records. It takes time, but there's far more to see than what they currently have for sale in their royals e-shop. If you're in the mood to shop, I've found them to be a reliable dealer using paypal. But it takes time to get the merchandise. Be prepared to wait 4 weeks to receive a coin in the USA.

Nicer than cgb's 1737 for sure, and I'd guess worth a bit more to the right person. The French love their ecus. It's interesting that the Spanish limit their royal domain to "HISPAN ET IND" on the 8 reales but the French ecu shows no set limit on the royal domain. Typical. I prefer this group, though... Not uncommon, but Bordeaux mint. I bought it by weight out of a dealer's bullion sack.
