Today as I was looking through bills at work I found something that I thought was curious. I was looking at the back plate numbers and found two 2006 series 1 dollar bills that had the same back plate number 48. However one bill was from Dallas and the other was from Chicago. So I thought to myself sweet one of these is misprinted. Then as I'm continuing to look through I find two 2003 A series ones with the same back plate numbers 92. Again one was Dallas one was Chicago. I thought the plate numbers were suppose to be unique to each mint. Can someone please shed some light on this. Thanks.

You question is actually do the two printing factories share plates, which is no.

There are two printing facilities, in DC and Fort Worth. These two places have their own plates. If you look at the plate number on some notes, they will have FW, which means it was printed in Ft. Worth. If they have nothing, they are printed in DC. Also on the reverse plates, larger numbers mean FW and smaller numbers mean DC.

The FRB seals are put on in a 3rd process after the obverse and reverse (and the numbers+seal, too I think) so it doesn't matter for the plate numbers. It's just what the bank orders and what the printing facilities have on hand at that time.

I see. I was wondering how that all worked. I had just assumed that all 12 federal reserve banks printed their own money. That explanes a lot. So do the two facilites share plate numbers or are they unique to each facility? Also while we are sort of on the topic what is the 1995 series 295 Ft. Worth mule error? I guess I'm not sure what a mule error is.

Yeah, the two facilities share plate numbers but not the plate. One number would be bigger than the other.

1995 295Ft? haha what is that? A dollar bill and a forint note

A mule is usually a coin with designs that are not supposed to be matched with each other, for example an obverse of 1991 design with a reverse design of 1992, and combinations thereof.

I would love to see pictures of what you've got!

Its not something that I've got unfortunately, just something that I've read about and was curious about. I answered my own question with a little more research. Apparently there was a bunch of series 1995 Ft. Worth dollars that had back plate number 295 but the 295 was small like a Washington bill. Here is the web address to the site where I found the info: http://www.lewdufault.net/servlet/C...aving+Errors I want to thank you for your help in clearing up these questions for me and I'll be seeing you around.
